With the implementation of the Identifier, LCL is committed to innovation in identity verification for all its data centers. The LCL Identifier includes two-factor authentication using smart software based on biometrics, such as palm reading and facial recognition. It was developed especially for LCL and arose from successful co-creation.

Biometric verification

The expertise of software companies such as ORIBI ID-Solutions and Perfect ID was enlisted to develop the LCL Identifier. LCL approached ORIBI ID-Solutions because they are a software company specialising in identity verification. Chino Klaverweide-Lorteije, commercial director at ORIBI ID-Solutions: “LCL came with a request to modernise access control at its data centers, which required identity verification in an unmanned environment. A mere physical check of the identification document was not sufficient. They wanted to take security to the next level with biometric authentication; facial comparison with a photograph and palm registration.”

Perfect ID, a software company that focuses on biometric authentication, was brought in for the palm registration. Director Marc Strackx: “We have developed a user-friendly biometric application that creates a unique key based on a palm vein scan. This allows us to offer multiple verification based on Fujitsu's PalmSecure sensor.” This is how the cooperation between LCL, ORIBI ID-Solutions and Perfect ID started. Together with Fujitsu, already very familiar to LCL as the company has been using LCL's services for some time, this led to a special co-creation project.

Co-creation
The importance of co-creation came to the fore in the converging of different expertises. That was sometimes a challenge. Klaverweide-Lorteije: “We sat down with a number of important parties for LCL. Among other things, the party responsible for the software used to register visitors to LCL. And, of course, with the palm reader's partner; it all has to come together in one package. Just connecting the software systems with each other was a challenge. In order to make these connections, many discussions were held with partners. There was also a great deal of consultation regarding the test process for the LCL Identifier, with each party contributing its own expertise on an equal footing.”

Privacy safeguards

There was also intensive collaboration to ensure the privacy of the identity check. Strackx: “The LCL Identifier includes two-factor authentication, which is currently the highest form of authentication in terms of security. Because it checks something physical and biometric, privacy is guaranteed. A person is him/herself the bearer of the data, namely the palm of their hand and a resulting code, meaning it is not possible to commit fraud. This is confirmed by Klaverweide-Lorteije: “The software is set up in such a way that we can guarantee all the privacy elements. Information is asymmetrically encrypted so that no one can access it just like that. Privacy-specific information is shielded.”

Positive cooperation

Klaverweide-Lorteije looks back on the very positive collaboration. “Although it was difficult to get everyone and everything on the same wavelength at the beginning, you could see the parties growing together during the project. We had to drive things forward and needed a lot of information from these other parties. Partly thanks to the mediation of LCL, something very good has come out of it. The LCL Identifier is a huge addition to our range. This was also a fantastic project for us to be involved in. We are proud to have been able to contribute to this.”

Strackx agrees. “What I always encounter with integration projects is that you notice big differences in how companies manage things. If the communication with the parties is not good, you will then have problems with the integration. At LCL, the entire project progressed well with the necessary expertise. Although there were some issues with the integration, they were all resolved quickly. Co-creation is the most important thing; that the parties have the necessary trust in each other to find a solution together. LCL played a key role, without their communication it would have been difficult to turn such a project into a big success.”
