How does LCL ensure your data is not only digitally but also physically secure in our data centers? Recent research shows that this is one of our customers’ top concerns. Time to shed light on the daily workings behind our security infrastructure. We spoke to IT Systems Manager Sam Berckmans and Chief Information Officer Nicolas Coppée about how LCL keeps your infrastructure safe.
Even if your data lives in the digital space, the physical environment is just as critical. “Whatever happens in the digital world, everything depends on physical infrastructure,” says Sam. “Cloud data is only as secure as the machines it runs on. Your processes and data are stored in servers, cables, and hardware physically located in our data centers.” Sam also stresses the importance of efficient access. “We want our customers to feel like they’re entering a highly secure environment, with strict access controls that are still smooth and user-friendly. At LCL, we combine maximum security with a positive user experience.”
LCL buildings are designed using a layered ‘onion model’: every visitor is guided step-by-step toward the core of the data center through multiple security layers. “It starts with a solid fence and secured gate, followed by identity verification at every checkpoint: parking access, ID control, and finally the mantrap leading to the server rooms,” Nicolas explains. “Only authorised individuals can enter the server rooms. Our focus lies on the three pillars of information security: confidentiality, availability, and integrity. Physical security is the foundation of all digital safeguards.”
Since 2018, all new visitors and customers go through the LCL Identifier, a smart self-service registration kiosk. Here, you scan your ID or passport, take a live photo, register your palm, and receive a personal access badge. “This fully automated control ensures error-free visitor registration,” says Sam. “Your live photo must match your ID, or you won’t gain access. This prevents identity fraud.”
Privacy is key, Sam stresses. “The LCL Identifier uses multi-factor authentication, currently the highest standard in physical security. Biometric data is strictly limited and only used for security purposes. It is neither necessary nor desirable for us to store sensitive information on our servers, but we must know who is present in case of emergency. The combination of a person’s hand and badge prevents fraudulent access.”
After registration, visitors enter a mantrap: a secure entry vestibule that only allows one person at a time. The second door only opens after the first closes and identity is reconfirmed via badge and biometric scan. “The mantrap prevents tailgating,” Sam says. “Access badges also define which areas a person is allowed to enter. Our multi-step process guarantees that visitors only access authorised zones.”
At LCL, we continue to think ahead: starting in September, we will begin reviewing and redesigning the entire security setup at LCL Wallonia One in Gembloux, including a complete renewal of the mantrap. “Where possible, we always install a double mantrap: two parallel mantraps allow redundancy and smoother access flows, without compromising safety,” Sam adds.
Prevention is essential, but active monitoring is just as crucial. That’s why LCL invested in a state-of-the-art video management system with over 500 cameras across all sites. “This system features smart analytics, a clearer interface, and improved stability,” Nicolas says. “Our newest data centers use 5 to 8 MP cameras, a major upgrade from HD, offering better detection and infrared performance over long distances.”
These camera feeds are exclusively used for protecting assets and recording incidents. They verify use of personal protective equipment and adherence to prescribed routes. They also support our security staff in detecting emergencies or assisting staff in need, thanks to functions like fall detection.
Sam highlights that LCL doesn’t just comply with strict internal policies, we also proactively meet external cybersecurity and physical security regulations. “We closely follow Belgian legislation and work with security authorities to meet all standards and certifications. That way, our customers can focus on their core business.”
LCL also continues to innovate. “We’re exploring a new biometric scanner for the LCL Identifier,” Sam says. “Currently, visitors need to place their hand five times, but the new system would require just one motionless scan, thanks to an automated shutter mechanism. The result? Better imaging and even smoother access. Returning visitors don’t need to re-register, after their first visit, their biometric data is securely linked to a badge provided at reception. In short: LCL is continuously building a secure, future-proof environment for your data."
