As enterprises expand across multiple sites, cloud environments and hybrid infrastructures, the architecture of the wide area network (WAN) is becoming increasingly strategic. Traffic flows are more distributed, dependencies more complex and tolerance for downtime non-existent. In that ecosystem, WAN-Connect focuses exclusively on designing and operating resilient architectures that ensures businesses stay connected. Founder and CEO Marcel De Beule: “Uptime isn’t optional anymore. We engineered a multi-carrier, multi-medium SD-WAN-ready solution so your network never becomes your weakest link.”

How would you pitch WAN-Connect?

Marcel De Beule: “We are a Belgian B2B internet service provider, specialised in wide area network connectivity. We’ve been active for 4 years and have achieved 16 consecutive quarters of growth. Today, we connect more than 1,000 companies across the Benelux.”

“Our typical customers are organisations with multiple sites: retail chains, logistics players, production companies, integrators. These are environments where downtime immediately translates into operational disruption. What they desire is complete peace of mind. As a compact organisation we remain agile and make decisions quickly.”

The connectivity market is highly competitive. What makes WAN-Connect different?

“Many large telecom operators have evolved into integrators. They sell connectivity, but also security, cloud services, Wi-Fi and managed IT. We focus exclusively on connectivity, which makes us a neutral partner for system integrators instead of a competitor.”

“Secondly, we are technology-agnostic: we combine fibre, coax, VDSL, 5G and even satellite connectivity where needed. For each location, we objectively determine the best technical mix. And most importantly, we design for real resilience. True redundancy does not mean two lines within the same network. It means different technologies, different operators, and ideally different infrastructures. If our own backbone were ever affected, the customer must remain online.”

SD-WAN plays an important role in that strategy?

“Absolutely. The market is clearly shifting toward SD-WAN architectures, since it allows multiple circuits (fibre, coax, 5G, …) to be intelligently managed and load-balanced. The system automatically selects the optimal path based on performance metrics. Many providers offer dual lines within their own network footprint. That reduces commercial complexity but does not eliminate systemic risk. At WAN-Connect, at least one of the lines is always outside our own core network. That separation guarantees continuity even in extreme scenarios.”

You emphasise proactive monitoring.

“We operate 24/7 monitoring and proactively contact customers when anomalies occur. Our support line consists of engineers, not scripted call-center agents. Customers speak directly with someone who can access the CPE, analyse real-time metrics and take action. We also provide read-only ACS access to customers so they can see real-time device performance themselves. That kind of transparency builds trust.”

Marcel De Beule presents Laurens van Reijen with an award for the strong partnership between WAN-connect and LCL.

What technological developments are currently driving your growth?

“One major driver is SD-WAN combined with multi-technology redundancy, which we already discussed. Another is our full-stack coax and fibre deployment capability. For certain infrastructures, we manage the entire process ourselves from order intake to physical installation and CPE deployment. That vertical control enables short delivery times.”

“We also recently introduced a dual-operator 5G solution with fixed public IP addresses. For many enterprises that’s critical. Carrier-grade NAT often complicates VPN tunnels and secure connections. By offering a fixed public IP across dual mobile operators, we eliminate that limitation.”

How do you see AI and evolving IT architectures impacting connectivity?

“AI will significantly increase bandwidth demand and raise expectations around uptime. But the real shift is architectural. Enterprises are moving toward distributed environments: cloud workloads, hybrid infrastructures, edge computing… That increases the importance of stable WAN design. At the same time, tolerance for downtime is disappearing. Our role is to make that complexity invisible for the customer.”

What are your main challenges?

“Our biggest challenge is maintaining quality while growing. We could scale faster, but we deliberately choose not to. Service level is our differentiator. We currently operate with less than 1% churn, which is exceptionally low in telecom. We are convinced that if service quality drops, growth becomes irrelevant. Controlled growth allows us to preserve our engineering culture and proactive support model.”

How does LCL fit into your proposition?

“For us, presence in high-quality data centers is non-negotiable. Reliable connectivity starts with reliable core infrastructure. LCL’s focus on redundancy, power resilience and operational excellence aligns perfectly with our philosophy. In 4 years, we have not experienced even one second of downtime.”

“Sustainability is also increasingly important. When we can demonstrate to our customers that our infrastructure is hosted in an environment committed to energy efficiency and responsible operations, that strengthens our value proposition. And finally, LCL’s carrier-neutral ecosystem provides the interconnection density we need to build true redundancy.”
