What is it, what is it used for and who uses it?

Time for a lowdown!

What?
The AWV telematics network is an IP network specifically designed to enable data exchange between technical applications for traffic and waterways management. On the one hand, it is used to exchange data and video images generated on highways and waterways, and on the other hand it is the physical link between the traffic management center and its dynamic signalling systems. A powerful telematics network is therefore an absolute must for the road and water traffic! To guarantee and improve the operational stability of this network, less reliable and less efficient copper cables are being replaced gradually by fiber optic cables, and ring structures are being built to make communication redundant.

Who?
In Flanders, the telematics network is managed by the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency AWV. The network is used by project engineers for applications like lane control, vehicle counting, monitoring of distances between trucks and the ban on trucks overtaking, (fixed) speed cameras, section control (e.g. Erpe/Mere – Wetteren), depth measurements on waterways, remote control of moveable bridges, monitoring and control of public lighting ... CCTV cameras provide real-time images, e.g. of the traffic situation, and a number of these images can be consulted by the public on this website (verkeerscentrum.be). In addition, the Flemish authorities use the network to connect various buildings.

Where?
AWV's telematics network extends all over Flanders. We are talking about a fiber optic network of about 2,500 kilometers.

Who with?
LCL hosts two data centers connecting the telematics network to the Internet for the public websites, the secure servers, the secure connections with other networks, VPN connections and GPRS (mobile solutions).
