Survey: Belgium's listed companies have a false sense of security when it comes to data storage

97% do not test back-up systems, and 50% plan to outsource activities

The CIOs and IT managers of 168 Belgian quoted companies took part in the survey. Of these companies, 87.5% felt they were protected from disasters such as fire or lengthy power cuts. Surprisingly, these respondents said that this was ‘because power cuts rarely happen’. The fact that they also have a disaster recovery service also added to their sense of security. Just 5% of respondents indicated that their organization was ‘reasonably protected', while 7.5% said that their organization had inadequate protection. This final group stated that in the event of a disaster it would not be possible to guarantee the continuity of the organization.

CM: “A robust, well-connected data center is crucial for our day-to-day activities”

CM has two data centers, and most of its applications run at both locations at the same time. This means that the system will continue to work even if a disaster occurs at one of the locations. The first data center is located at CM's head office in Schaarbeek, and until 2011 the second data center was also managed internally at a different location. “When that building was closed we started to look for an external partner,” explained Koen Crabbe, ICT Infrastructure Director at CM. “We wanted to select a robust, well-managed, Belgian data center that could also guarantee good access to data. In LCL we found a brand-new, state-of-the-art data center that was able to make firm guarantees in the area of security.”

LCL invests € 1.9 million in new data center in Diegem

The new data center, LCL Diegem 4, has been equipped with the latest technology to guarantee the dependability and security of the servers and data. Given this, the lion's share of the investment, € 1.3 million, has been in the data center's technological infrastructure. The technology installed in the new data center includes a state-of-the-art fire extinguishing system that uses NOVEC 1230, the safest extinguishing agent on the market in terms of human safety and the environment. As a result, Diegem 4, the third building at LCL's Diegem site, is the site's most sophisticated building.
