Customer case: Citymesh

Context

Citymesh is a West-Flemish telecom operator, specialized in the development of large-scale wireless networks and focused on the B2B market. Among other things, the company provides WiFi networks in holiday parks, in cities or at events and also collects information about users. For example about when and why they use the networks.

Citymesh also offers 5G ready networks for professional applications. “We are currently an operator in Belgium that uses 5G,” says Mitch De Geest, CEO of Citymesh. “We were able to get hold of part of the 5G spectrum, even before other large operators could. We currently already provide private 5G ready networks for a few ports and urban sites.”

Thanks to that 5G license, Citymesh can also support the emergency services through drones. “Through the reliable 5G ready network, drone pilots can send drones to an accident for reconnaissance. This allows the drones to provide extra information to emergency workers before they are on site. The drone pilots work from our own control center.“

Challenge

Due to the growth of its activities, Citymesh was looking for a good data center partner. “We were mainly looking for a reliable data center,” says De Geest. "Continuity is crucial to guarantee a good service to our customers.

Our networks must constantly function excellently. In addition, it had to be possible to connect with an available and suitable telecom operator for each specific customer and location. Our data center therefore also had to allow connections with a wide range of operators."

Result

In 2010, Citymesh chose LCL as a data center partner. "That choice of a data center was very important to us," says De Geest. "After all, it helps determine the quality of the networks that we build for our customers.

Customers can count on our services, partly because we can rely on LCL. LCL invests, among other things, in thorough back-up systems, so that we can rest assured in terms of continuity. Furthermore, Citymesh considers security to be of paramount importance, and we knew that this also applies to LCL. The high level of redundancy and safety convinced us."

“In addition to stability, LCL also offers an extensive choice of telecom operators, which means that we can be flexible in our services. Moreover, we can always consider which operator is most suitable in a specific context. Both for traditional fiber optic connections and backbone connections, LCL offers various options.”

"Optimal connectivity is crucial for the networks that Citymesh sets up and that is what LCL stands for,” says Laurens van Reijen, managing director of LCL. “We see that more and more data must be exchanged between networks. So connectivity is also becoming increasingly important in that respect. For example, without very fast data exchange between operators, self-driving cars cannot function."

"LCL is a future-oriented data center company,” says De Geest. “It follows developments in the telecom market closely, just like we do. LCL also has a unique position to network in the sector. Their team brings us into  contact with the right people."
